Looks like it ...

I'll give it a few more months, but when the domain name comes up for renewal early next year, I'll let it expire (or let one of you guys have it if you want it).

Yeah, I think people prefer the other methods, the email list, and the other forums at TrailerSailor.com.

The good thing is that there are plenty of choices for Monty owners!

before you 'put a fork in and call this done' some of the information needs to be put on the web.  the blog posts about renovations shouldn't be lost.

Howard Audsley ... if you are 'listening' ... i can help if you like in getting your helpful articles on another site. the email link to the left of my post will work for sending me a message 'off list'.

No problem discussing it here, if you like, or enlisting my help if you need it.  Anyone can have any of my content without restriction, but you'll have to get the copyright owner's permission for other people's content (like Howard's!).

You can also advise everyone else on the mailing list, etc. that the site will be closing in November.

The domain name expires Nov. 17, 2010, so that's the date the site will go dark unless someone wants the domain name and take over the site.  I would give anyone registered here the domain name, and probably any Monty owner who wanted it (except for those that have expressed their low opinion of me!)

The new owner would have to pay to transfer it, of course.  You can transfer it to Tucows, GoDaddy or any other registrar.  My company, HOSTkabob.com, charges $9.95 for a transfer-in with a one-year extension, but the domain name can be transferred to any registrar.  Maintaining the domain name will cost from $9.95 to 10.95 per year (those really low rates you see are usually only for the first year!)

If the new owner also wants the website as is, they can have it, but will have to either move it to a new host or pay for hosting the site on my server.  The cost to keep it here, as is, is $3.40 per month, or $40.80 per year.

If you want the site and want to move it to a new host, it is easier if you choose a Linux host with Cpanel control panel.  Ask the host if he will do a "Cpanel to "Cpanel" transfer; that's nearly painless.  I'll assist in any way I can before the transfer and for a short while afterwards for the transition.

Email me at fshagan@gmail.com if you want to ask any questions you don't feel comfortable asking in public.

I am now, after Frank's note hit my email. I'm disappointed the monty folks didn't take advantage of this, as I think this site combines all the features the group uses, in a best of all worlds format. I think I know why it never got rolling as I had hoped it would, but no reason to go there.

As for my content, I give my permission to Frank or any of the monty folks signed up here to have or use it as they see fit. Other than sharing the information, my main purpose was to populate the site with good information to serve as an example of what the site could be. If it helps someone else, have at it.

My biggest concern with the site lately has been a deluge of names signing up to receive my blog, which appears to be a backdoor attempt to use the site to post web addresses for the search engines to find. Like Spam in the email, it goes with the territory, I suppose, but helping someone in this way was not my intent. If this stays alive, I'd suggest the site administrator find a way to limit access to these folks.

As for the site, I hate to see it go, but I have no interest in keeping it going myself. I don't have the time or ability to administer it. If it was taken out of Frank's name and put into one of ours, it may gain more acceptance. I never questioned Frank's motive for doing this, and if memory serves, I'm the one who talked him into doing it. Feel kinda bad about that now. If David or someone wants to take it on, I'd be supportive of the effort.

howard:

i'll grab the data from your posts and put something together.  i hate to see such helpful information go away.  once it is complete i'll let you look to see if you like the presentation.

yes ... this issue is a constant battle.  honest site owners create 'firewalls' and other systems to keep this from happening.  the 'spammers' just react by making better 'bots' to get through the security features and re-spam the site.  it is all much worse than the cold war M.A.D. theory to keeping the world safe.

"comment spam" is one of the issues; you can avoid it altogether by eliminating any commenting, but that makes it less interactive, of course.  But it is a battle to keep a site clean.

Take a look at "wget" (there's a windows version) to see if you can download all the content with that.  If you're familiar with SQL, I can do a mySQL database backup and you can get the content that way, although images are not usually stored directly in the SQL database.  I can also give you FTP access if you want to download all the static content on the server in the original folders.  But, you will need the SQL database if you intend to import the text into another site programatically.

There are only a few pages of content, so it might be easier to just copy and paste!
